Celebrate the changing of the seasons with Northern Central Railway this autumn! From Fall Foliage excursions to special events like the annual Trunk or Treat Flyer, the Northern Central Railway offers unique autumn-themed fun the whole family will love!
The NCR's 2021 Fall schedule includes the following excursions:
PA Cowboy Weekend Saturday, October 9 & Sunday, October 10 transport yourself to the Wild West in this event celebrating cowboy and cowgirl culture! Ride along with our No. 17 locomotive with “the most reckless class of outlaws in the wild country,” and prepare for an experience straight out of the most beloved cowboy films–complete with train robberies, shootouts, live performances, and more!
Fall Foliage All leaf peepers know the best way to experience the beauty of the changing leaves is on board the Northern Central Railway’s Fall Foliage Excursions! Sit back relax and enjoy a kaleidoscope of fall colors as our vintage diesel locomotive plunges through the autumn forests and rolling hills of Southern York County to Glen Rock October 16th, 20th, 23rd, 30th, 31st & November 14th, to Hanover Junction October 16th, 23rd, 31st & November 14th.
Howard Tunnel Peak Foliage Steam Special October 17th enjoy a gorgeous 30-mile round trip behind #17 winding through the Historic Codorus Valley with a brief stop at the Howard Tunnel to stretch your legs. The Howard Tunnel is the oldest active passenger railroad tunnel in the country! Your ticket (adult or child) includes a choice of a complimentary boxed lunch. The last day to purchase tickets with boxed lunch is Wednesday, October 13th.
Ales On The Rails (21 & older) Join the Northern Central Railway and York County Ale Trail for a scenic fall trip through Howard Tunnel while sampling cold craft brews from 3 of York County’s Micro Breweries on October 24th! Your ticket includes 4 samples from each brewery in a keepsake glass as well as complimentary water and snacks.
Ghost Tracks & Campfire Frights (Child-Friendly Excursion) Get ready for fascinating kid-friendly ghost tales by narrator Nancy Pritt as you voyage down the tracks and through the woods to Seitzland, PA October 23rd. On our return, we’ll stop at Railroad Park for a campfire (weather permitting). You’ll be able to cook hot dogs and roast marshmallows for s’mores while listening to more spooky stories by the fire. Don’t forget your lawn chairs and blankets for this spine-chilling good time! This ride is suitable for passengers of all ages.
Ghost Tracks & Campfire Frights (Adult Excursion) October 30th enjoy some frightening tales as our train travels down the tracks and through the woods! We’ll stop at Railroad Park for a campfire (weather permitting) during our return. You’ll be able to cook hot dogs and roast marshmallows for s’mores with more scary stories by the fire. This version of the ride is not recommended for children
Trunk-Or-Treat Flyer Grab your ghosts, goblins, princesses, and superheroes, and join us for a day full of family fun on October 30th! All riders are encouraged to come dressed in their Halloween costume to enjoy this ride to Seitzland. After the train returns to our New Freedom station, children are invited to participate in the trunk-or-treat in the High Street parking lot next to Marge Goodfellow Park (weather permitting). There will also be a few surprise guests from our Princess, Toy Box, and Superhero Express excursions!
Lincoln & The Hanover Junction Railroad Experience Saturday, November 6th & Sunday, November 7th, living historian James Hayney will have you believing you are seeing the real Abraham Lincoln. Relive the emotion and passion of the 1860s when we recreate Lincoln’s November 1863 ride on the Northern Central Railway. President Lincoln traveled these rails on his way to Gettysburg to present the Gettysburg Address, and two years later his funeral car used the same line. Learn more about these trips and the history of the Gettysburg Address and listen to Mr. Hayney recite President Lincoln’s famous speech.
Wild West Express November 14th witness the exploits of the infamous Jesse James and the Younger Gang, a well-known group of 19th-century outlaws! During your trip to Seitzland and back, experience train travel as it was in the Wild West when this notorious group held up trains and passengers. Will the good guys catch them, or will the gang get away?
